THE PATH OF THE FATEFUL TORNADO THAT HIT LORAIN IN 1924 LORAIN
PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM’S MAIN LIBRARY EXPLORES LOCAL HISTORY LORAIN, OHIO – Over 70 people were
killed during the tornado that devastated Lorain on June 28, 1924. Come to a pictorial presentation that
reviews that fateful day at Lorain Public Library System’s Main Library on
Thursday, June 27 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. The Main Library is located at 351 W.
Sixth St., Lorain. Preregistration is required by calling
the Main Library at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450. Learn more about the killer storm that
came from Lake Erie and some say took only three minutes to tear a three-mile
wide path through downtown Lorain. This is Ohio’s deadliest tornado,
according to Ohio Historical Society websites. While it was not the largest nor strongest tornado, it struck in the heart of a city,
putting thousands of people at risk. Ohio Historical Society websites say
more than 1,000 homes were damaged, 500 more completely destroyed. Every
business in downtown Lorain sustained some damage. This tornado also holds the state record
for the most people ever killed by a tornado in one building. Fifteen people
were killed in the old State Theatre in Lorain. Sources total the damage estimate from
this storm at well over 10 million “1924” dollars. Lorain Public Library System provides

CONNECTION TO THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD LORAIN PUBLIC LIBRARY
SYSTEM’S MAIN LIBRARY EXPLORES LOCAL HISTORY LORAIN, OHIO – Discover what role Lorain played in the
Underground Railroad. Come to The Underground Railroad: The Lorain County
Connection on Thursday, June 20 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Lorain Public Library
System’s Main Library. The Main Library is located at 351 W. Sixth St.,
Lorain. One of the final stops on the Underground Railroad was in
Lorain, known as Station 100. The stop was located in the mouth of the Black
River. This stop near the shores of Lake Erie led fugitive
slaves from the south toward Canada until about 1861. These determined
travelers sought freedom in the land to our north. Currently, a historical monument marks the stop and pays
homage to the abolitionists who risked their lives aiding slaves in their
escape. Come to the Main Library to view photos and hear more
about the city of Lorain and Lorain County’s connection to the Underground Railroad. Preregistration is required by calling the Main Library
at 440-244-1192 or 1-800-322-READ, ext. 450. ### Lorain Public Library System provides everyone with free,
